STM32 clones
« on: 08. January 2020, 09:48:56 »

Hi all,
I found elsewhere that there is company in China who produces a huge set of clones of digital chips, some of them are the ARM based microcontrollers. More precisely the ST microcontrollers... It's name is GigaDevice. I'm not proud of it but our local seller has noticeable quantities in warehouse:

https://www.tme.eu/pl/en/details/gd32f405vgt6/microcontrollers-others/gigadevice/

Has anyone used these chips?

Hello Sławek,
AnyTone D868UV/D878UV DMR/FM handsets use an ARM clone of the type GD32F303VGT6.
I have upgraded my 868 firmware to the 878 without any problems.
It works fine and can be flashed with the ST-Link tool.

Hi Thomas,
thanks, good to know that STlink sees it as own device.
Side note - I hope will not be forced to use them someday...

i plan to put on a bigger (4inch) display and mount it in a metal case with a few 18650 cells

the stm32 "clones" seems to do their job well ... grin

analyzer was cheap (roughly 60 eu) ... you also can get them WITH case for 85 to 90 eu but cause i plan to put on a bigger display anyway i bought the bare model with no case

pay attention ... some are sold without calibration kit and/or battery

and nearly all sellers on evilbay sell clones of the saa2

original source is tindie ...

The LCD must have same controller and resolution - otherwise you must adapt the firmware, too.

there is an fw available for that bigger display
... and i do know somebody who added a bigger display to mchf (wink wink) ...
should be an easy change ...
another step bigger (5 to 10 inch) would mean another fw change (more pixels) ... and there is no fw for that available (yet) ...
maybe one day a clever programmer grabs the source and makes those changes ... till then i use the 4 inch

Hello Sigi,
I have nanoVNA with 2.8" display (the clone but with original stm- at least it looks so), it is truly small device - but with Rune's nanoVNA saver on the big screen - perfect, the official firmware suffers from low measurement points. There is alternative version with 201 points but under development.

I will wait for the 4" nanoVNA v2.0, athough Gabriel (Owocom) sometime ago denied this movement, maybe Hugen will do this and move the buttons from this strange location between rf connectors The community of nanoVNA is really huge, the v2.0 is growing too - I'm sure someone will modify the firmware soon, maybe even for bigger display than 4"...

Some interesting hot news from Gabriel about new designs:

https://groups.io/g/nanovna-users/topic/75903671

Not a word about core but i think they will use clones of STM too.
I think it would be good to open new thread with nanovna versions. This little thing is really useful...

I want to change my display to either a 5" or 7" touchscreen display, with the whole thing built into a bigger enclosure from Takachi Enclosures. Can you kindly direct me to who has successfully replaced the standard display with the larger display?

I would be very grateful for information as to how to accomplish this with my mcHF.

I think he is talking about nano-VNA...
