Title: Dead OVI40
Post by: WD8BXS on 23. January 2021, 08:19:32

I have a friends board on the bench, he accidently touched something .

Now when you press power the screen just goes white and nothing else happens.

When you release power it goes off.
I tried reloading boot loader but nothing happens but screen white.

Do you think the MCU is blown??

Hard to say without having access to the device...

But it may be that only the option bytes are scrambled (e.g. reset vectors).

You can check this with STLink and the software tool for it. If you can access STM with STLink the chances are good that this is the issue. Then take a look at the option bytes and compare them to the default. If they are wrong, step through this:

For all steps use STLink.
1) mass erase STM
2) enter option bytes setting
3) set all values to the defaults
4) flash bootloader
5) flash firmware

Hello Andreas,
Oh wow, it has been a while since I have used the STlink.
I hope I can remember what I did, hihi

I will give it a try.

Tnx Chuck WD8BXS

Please follow exactly these steps:
Quote:
For all steps use STLink.
1) mass erase STM
2) enter option bytes setting
3) set all values to the defaults
4) flash bootloader
5) flash firmware
If you do not know default settings please take a look at this thread started by you some time ago (https://www.amateurfunk-sulingen.de/forum/index.php?board=18;action=display;threadid=1175;start=msg18839#msg18839)

I was looking for that thread, but could not find it.

Thanks,
Chuck

Where can I get the information for mating the OVI40 to the Mchf RF board??

Thanks,
Chuck

Are there any special jumpers needed??

No. Just connect via the 30p header wihich is placed compatible to mcHF RF Board. But you need additional 12V for audio amplifier power supply connected.

Is that the P1 ? Do you have a suggestion as to where to tap into the 12volts

Chuck

Yes it is P1.

I have connected it to the drains of the MOSFET of the modification RF-04/05-N-010. If you do not have this modification: you already have a silent current at swiched off device. So simply connect it to 12V directly - silent current will increase a bit...

anyone have the file used to 3D print a case for the OVI40 with the mcHF board ?
can I run mcHF load of software in order to get the same display they have with the cw demod line of text?
Thanks Art

Hi Art,

CW decoding is standard function. Works with mcHF UI and with OVI40-UI. But on OVI40 the resolution of display i2 480x320 instead of 320x240 ::) LCD layout is much better and shows more details.

"3D-printed case"
I do not recommend to do so. mcHF power supply (linear regulators) and PA spends much heat. You need a metlal case. And if the case shall provide cooling it must have a minimum size - I do not mean the one of the chinese clones (absolutely too small).

Hi,

re Case:
I use a combination of both metal case (from the original mcHF metal case group production here in this forum many years ago, no longer available) and a 3d printed front plate for the OVI40 UI. I think this is a valid construction style, as the front doesn't get exposed to heat.

I could share the front model here (in OpenSCAD). But be aware, that I don't own any regular OVI40 v1.8. I have an v1.5 and a v1.7 PCB based OVI40 UI which have minor differences compared to the final v1.8 (a missing 6th menu button) and subtle changes in the positioning of some of the components based on the early prototypes feedback. So it would not be usable as is, it needs some simple modifications. And in its original form it fits only the case I own. Before anyone asks: I would not assist in any modification attempt.
