Title: Microphone issue
Post by: WD8BXS on 06. March 2018, 17:28:07

All is going well with the 140, except when I insert the microphone. This is the same mic I use with the mchf.

When inserted, the radio goes crazy. If I press PTT it transmits just fine, but when I let go, it goes crazy again.
Will this board not work with the same mic as the mchf??

At OVI40 microphone bias is switchable via firmware, but I am nearly sure thiss feature is not implemented actually. So it would be the best to use a dynamic microphone.

Are you familiar with the mics we are using on the mchf? AS I said when I PTT the mic works, it is just in standby that the radio keys very fast.

So you believe it is the wrong mic?

Microphone plug is 100% compatible with mcHF. So keying (PTT) must work flawlessly.

I never have had used any other microphone on my mcHF as my dynamic microphone. At mcHF bias is activated continuously so you can plug in dynamic or elctred without caring anything. At OVI40 bias must first be switched on (function not implemented yet) - otherwise there will be no or very low and/or distorted audio.

OK, Then there must be a problem, the radio should not go crazy from just plugging in the mic.
Could the D6 being faulty have anything to do with this?

No.

What resistor is present at audio input line does not matter in RX and PTT line is open when you plug in microphone (or is your PTT line defective??)

So there must be a soldering issue (short circuit) at the audio line of the mic which lets go the radio crazy.

I have replaced D6, and now the CW paddles work fine. I still have the issue with the PTT line, If I insert the mic while the radio is in CW, it starts sending dashes. If I insert the radio in SSB, it starts keying off and on very fast. I can duplicate this just by manually keying the radio with a jumper at the mic jack!

Any more ideas?
If there was a ground somewhere on the board, I think it would be keying all the time, not just with the mic plugged in.
I can take the same mic, plug it into the mchf and it works just fine.

EDIT:

Microphone plug on mcHF and OVI40 are compatible: shaft is ground, ring is PTT and tip is microphone. When pushing PTT PTT line must be torn to ground with a switch. When PTT is not pressed nothing should tear down PTT line.

Maybe OVI40 and mcHF differs if you connect something other than a switch between PTT line and any other pin. Such states are not defined and can lead to anything you can imagine.
